Limerick striker Colin O’Brien forced extra-time with a 92nd minute penalty before missing one in the shootout as Cobh went through 3-2 on penalties after another thriller in this FAI Carlsberg Cup second round replay.

Gareth O’Donovan, who gave away an earlier penalty also converted by O’Brien, pushed Paul Finucane as they came to meet Derek Conway’s free-kick and O’Brien fired home his second spot kick of the night.

Robert Brosnan appeared to have put Cobh into the next round when restoring their lead on 68 minutes. The sides had swapped penalties inside eight first half minutes.

Cobh went in front on 28 minutes when skipper Yelverton was taken down by Paul Finucane. Yelverton dusted himself down to slot home the spot kick.

Limerick were soon level when O’Brien scored from the spot after he had been fouled by Gareth O’Donovan.

But O’Brien, Mike Kerley and Stephen O’Mahoney failed to score for Limerick in the shoot out as Anthony Wolfe hit the crucial fifth penalty for Cobh to win 3-2.
