Reds expected to unveil new boss

Liverpool have called a news conference for 3.30pm today at Anfield where they are expected to unveil Rafael Benitez as their new manager.

The Spaniard stood down as coach of Valencia after guiding the club to the Primera Liga title and the UEFA Cup last season.

He is expected to be confirmed as Liverpool’s new manager this afternoon, succeeding Gerard Houllier who was sacked last month.

Benitez had to serve a 15-day notice period following his resignation from Valencia before taking on a new job.

Liverpool have yet to confirm that the annoucement is about Benitez but it is no secret that the 44-year-old has been in Merseyside for talks.

He has already been linked with several players at Valencia including Argentina defender Roberto Ayala and goalkeeper Jose Canizares.

However his first task will be to try to prevent Steven Gerrard moving to Chelsea and to persuade Michael Owen to sign a new contract.

Liverpool are also expected to end the uncertainty over assistant manager Phil Thompson’s position and announce at the news conference whether Benitez’ assistant Francisco Ayestaran is to follow him from Valencia.
