Wenger targets Champions League
Arsene Wenger watched as Arsenal were handed the Barclaycard Premiership trophy following their 2-1 victory against Leicester and revealed next season’s ambition: to win the Champions League as well.
The Gunners’ success domestically has not been mirrored in Europe where they have crashed out in the quarter-finals in 2001 and 2004 – their best performances in the Champions League – and Wenger wants that to end.
“The overall achievement of the club this season has been tremendous but we are missing, of course, the fact that we want to win the Champions League,” said the Frenchman.
“I hope the players won’t get a mental block about Europe. It’s just important to do well in your own championship first. What I would love to do is to do this and the Champions League together!”
Arsenal recovered from the shock of Paul Dickov giving Leicester the lead to clinch victory through Thierry Henry’s penalty and Patrick Vieira’s strike.
