Drogheda secure easy win

Drogheda United romped to an easy 4-1 victory at the expense of Dundalk in the Eircom League Cup on Monday evening.

Robbie Dunne put Dundalk in the lead after 15 minutes but then the Drogs took control of the match.

After a good move involving Gavin Whelan and John Flanagan, it was Andy Myler who put them back on terms after half an hour.

Declan O’Brien then took centre stage when he first struck the bar and then had a goal disallowed.

O’Brien finally made it 2-1 five minutes before the interval.

Midway through the second period substitute Mark Rooney added a third and then 10 minutes from time Steven Grey ensured it was 4-1.

In Monday night’s other match, Bray Wanderers claimed a 3-1 victory at Shamrock Rovers.

Bray took control with three goals in seven second-half minutes.

Eamon Zayed opened the scoring with a free-kick that trickled under the body of Mervyn Travers and then Kevin Grogan wriggled through for a second just a minute later.

Zayed killed the game with his second when he beat Travers to the ball.

Zayed was denied a hat-trick when he hit the post with a free-kick and then Shamrock got their consolation goal with a late Mark Kenny penalty awarded for a foul on Derek Treacy.
