The 23-year-old will leave Elland Road now Leeds have fallen out of the Barclaycard Premiership.

Relegation is unavoidable following last weekend’s 4-1 defeat at Bolton, and now Smith fancies testing himself in Italy or Spain.

He told The Sun: “I would love to play in one of the other top leagues in Europe.

“I am ready to play abroad. I watch the Spanish football on Saturday and Sunday nights and have often dreamed of playing out there.

“Italy would be a great place to go, too. There is nothing better than testing yourself against the world’s best defenders.”

Smith is a Leeds fan, and added: “I never thought I would ever leave Leeds. I thought I would spend my whole career there.

“But now I have got to go. I have got to do the right thing for my career - and going abroad really appeals.

“What’s happened at Leeds is disappointing but, at the same time, I am excited at where the next move could be.”
