Waterford maintained their remarkable start to the season to reduce Shelbourne's lead at the top back to three points with a rousing win at the Brandywell.

The Blues deserved their match winning lead which came on 38 minutes.

A fluid move down the right saw Daryl Murphy beat Peter Hutton to find David Mulcahy who sidestepped Sean Hargan to drill a shot past Patrick Jennings.

Derry owned the second half but just couldn't score.

The closest they came was on 59 minutes when Michael Holt’s 20-yard shot was well saved by Blues’ keeper Dan Connor.
