Newcastle weathered an early storm from Real Mallorca as they attempted to fight their way into the UEFA Cup quarter-finals on a bitter night on Tyneside.

The visitors took charge in the early stages without ever unduly troubling keeper Shay Given, but it was the home side who finished the half the stronger after Frenchman Laurent Robert whistled a free-kick just wide.
