Liverpool striker Florent Sinama-Pongolle is almost certain to miss the Reds’ UEFA Cup third-round match against Levski Sofia on Thursday with a badly bruised ankle.

The Frenchman had to be carried off in a reserve match against Blackburn at Chester’s Deva Stadium last night following a tackle by Michael Taylor.

It was initially thought his left ankle was broken in the tackle but it was confirmed as severe bruising after he was taken to hospital.

Sinama-Pongolle will have a further scan at the club’s Melwood training ground today.
