Evans: 'No point' in replacing Houllier

Former Liverpool boss Roy Evans believes there is “no point” in his former club replacing Gerard Houllier as manager.

Evans was in joint control at Anfield with Houllier from August to November 1998, having previously been in sole control from 1994.

In four seasons in charge, Liverpool did not finish outside the top four – a situation they would be keen to repeat this term.

But Evans is still backing his former co-manager. He said: “It is a bit frightening that Liverpool are 19 points behind top spot, they clearly need to be better.

“Everybody has said, including Gerard, that Liverpool have been inconsistent this season.

“And a team of Liverpool’s qualities should achieve more, everyone is aware of that.

“You have got to the stage now that if Gerard was to go, what would be the point?

“It would be very difficult for any other manager to finish higher than fourth, and Gerard has the best chance of taking them there.

“It is pointless people at this stage talking of replacing the manager.”

After watching Wolves snatch a draw against Liverpool in the last minute at Molineux, Evans told Sky Sports: “As a top team you always like to be professional and try not to give the ball away.

“But Michael Owen is only just back, and when the chances start going in then the confidence will return. But at the moment it is all a little bit of a struggle.”
