USA striker Brian McBride is poised to joined Blackburn next week in a £600,000 (€868,000) deal after a change of heart by the club.

Souness had originally only wanted the 31-year-old on loan but the Major League Soccer and Columbus Crew club were only prepared to sell.

Blackburn’s poor form and worrying position in the Premiership has persuaded Rovers to change their mind and pay a fee but as a result McBride is likely to be the only new face at Ewood Park this month unless Dino Baggio agrees to a loan move to Ancona.

Rovers chief executive John Williams told the Lancashire Evening Post about McBride: “I had a conversation with an agent last night and there’s a possibility a deal can be done.”
