The 28-year-old Chelsea star and his girlfriend were in bed when a man broke into his home and stole thousands of pounds-worth of jewellery.

Argentine midfielder Veron called in detectives after the break-in early yesterday morning at his luxury home in Barnes, south west London.

At least six people were staying in the house, including children.

A 35-year-old builder from Wandsworth, south London, was arrested following the break-in yesterday.

He was charged with aggravated burglary and appeared at Richmond magistrates’ court this morning.

He was remanded in custody to appear at Kingston Crown Court on a date to be fixed.

Veron was one of the first players to be bought by Chelsea’s Russian owner Roman Abramovich.
