Tottenham make new bid for Diego

Santos coach Emerson Leao has revealed that Tottenham Hotspur have made a new offer for midfielder Diego, who was close to joining the London club back in August.

That time Tottenham offered up to £6.9m (€9.8m), but Santos president Marcelo Teixeira did not accept it as the club would only earn half that fee for the player, whose own father Djair Cunha is entitled to 50% of any transfer fee his son may command.

Leao said in a TV interview: “There is a new offer for Diego, who really wants to go to Europe. His father is in close contact with the English people.

“But the president was very clear. If they pay what Santos want, then Diego leaves. If they don’t, he stays.”

It is believed that Santos want their slice of the deal to be worth £5.7m (€8.2m).

Leao said: “I think there is a good chance of losing Diego for next season.”

The Campeonato Brasileiro finishes this weekend and Santos will finish in second position.
