Title winners end season with draw

Shamrock Rovers 1-1 Shelbourne

Shelbourne lifted the eircom League trophy on Friday night as not even a disappointing 1-1 draw with Shamrock Rovers was going to stop their end of season party.

Jason Byrne opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 24th minute after Stuart Byrne was felled just inside the area by goalkeeper Shane Davoren.

Shamrock Rovers protested that the foul had taken place outside the area, but referee Ian Stokes stood firm and Byrne calmly stroked home his 21st League goal of the season.

Both sides then had chances before Stephen McGuinness scored the equaliser in the 55th minute with a far post header from Stephen Grant’s inswinging corner from the left.
