Hughes arrested in connection with crash

West Bromwich Albion striker Lee Hughes has been detained on suspicion of killing a car passenger who died after the footballer's Mercedes collided with another vehicle.

Hughes is alleged to have fled the scene of the crash, which happened in the early hours of Sunday.

Officers said on Sunday they had visited the home of the Mercedes driver and contacted his employers, but had not managed to trace him.

A West Midlands Police spokesman, who declined to confirm the name of the arrested man, said: "A 27-year-old man from Meriden, near Coventry, has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and failing to stop after an injury road traffic collision.

"He remains in custody at Little Park Street police station in Coventry and is due to be questioned by officers."

Hughes' silver Mercedes CL55 coupe and a Renault Megane were in collision in Pickford Grange Lane, near Meriden.

Douglas Graham, 56, a rear seat passenger in the Megane, died from his injuries.

His wife, who was also a passenger, was treated at Coventry and Warwickshire Hospital for a broken leg. The male driver suffered a broken pelvis and another male passenger also suffered bruising.

It is understood that there were a total of five men in the Mercedes, but Hughes is alleged to have left the scene with one of the passengers in the Mercedes, who has since been spoken to by police, but not arrested.

Three other passengers in the CL55 remained at the scene.
