“We are sixth in the league now. Of course, it could have been better; it could have been worse.”

“We are not looking to go and do anything crazy in the transfer window.

“We will concentrate on what is happening at the moment and we will look at it in a couple of weeks.”

Keegan will nonetheless be assessing several triallists in the coming weeks.

The young hopefuls will be put through their paces at Carrington before a decision is taken on whether to sign any of them.

“They are more for the future,” Keegan told mcfc.co.uk.

“We should not stop looking to strengthen our base of younger players. I would not be doing my job if I was not looking at these players.”

Meanwhile, former England defender Stuart Pearce has admitted his long-term aim is to return to management.

Pearce, who had a spell as caretaker boss of Nottingham Forest, is in no rush to give up his coaching role at City.

He told BBC GMR: “Things haven’t changed in the year-and-a-half since I came on the coaching staff.

“I’ve got aspirations to work in management. That’s never changed since day one.

“The bottom line is I am here (at City) as a coach and I am fully happy.

“If I have to stay, however long, as long as the manager and board are happy with me I don’t think it will be a problem.”
