Leeds striker Alan Smith was today arrested over allegations that he kicked a bottle into a crowd at a game against Manchester United last month, police said.

The 23-year-old, who was today picked for the England squad, was questioned and later released on bail.

A spokeswoman for West Yorkshire Police said he would have to return to a police station at a later date and a file would be passed to the Crown Prosecution Service.

The spokeswoman said: "A 23-year-old man was arrested by officers from City and Holbeck in Leeds today and questioned in relation to an alleged incident at the Leeds United versus Manchester United fixture on October 28.

“He was questioned and released on police bail to return to a police station at a later date. A file will be sent to the CPS for consideration.”
