Woodgate close to Magpies return

Newcastle defender Jonathan Woodgate could return against Chelsea next month.

The 23-year-old has been sidelined since September 27, when he underwent surgery to repair a double hernia, but is progressing so well in training that manager Bobby Robson has had to warn him not to overdo it.

But he is now within a fortnight of being ready to play, and that could mean the trip to Stamford Bridge on November 9.

“Jonathan is doing phenomenally well bearing in mind the seriousness of his operation, and he’s looking to really kick on this week,” physio Paul Ferris told The Journal. “To be honest, we’re having to hold him back.

“Realistically, he should be ready to push for a first-team place in two weeks’ time, and everyone has been impressed with his progress.”

The England international originally picked up the problem during the club’s pre-season trip to Malaysia, but soldiered on during the opening month of the campaign, finally succumbing after the 0-0 draw with Bolton on September 20.

In his absence, Andy O’Brien and the much-maligned Titus Bramble have begun to form a solid central defensive partnership, and that has laid the foundation for an improved run of form.

Indeed, so well have O’Brien and Bramble played that Robson will have a selection dilemma, although Woodgate’s contribution since his move from Leeds in January means he seems a certain starter once he is ready to return.
