Newcastle make sure of progress
FT NAC Breda 0 Newcastle 1 (Newcastle win 6-0 on aggregate)
Frenchman Laurent Robert handed Newcastle a narrow victory in Breda as his side eased their way into the UEFA Cup second round.
The midfielder struck four minutes from time at the end of an uneventful encounter to extend his side’s aggregate lead to 6-0.NAC went close again 15 minutes form time when Engelaar broke into the box, but Jenas got in a superb covering tackle to protect his keeper and Bramble tidied up.
Dyer could have snatched victory on 80 minutes when he collected Ameobi’s pass at the near post but could not beat a defiant Coutinho from close range.
Robson introduced Darren Ambrose, Steve Caldwell and Lomana LuaLua for Solano, Bramble and Dyer as the clock ran down, but it was Robert who had the final say when he ran on to Jemas’ measured ball six minutes from time and slotted past Coutinho for the only goal of the game.
