Rio Ferdinand was today expected to be charged by the Football Association following the missed drugs test which sparked a week-long controversy within the England squad.

Ferdinand’s exclusion from the England squad for Saturday’s Euro 2004 group decider in Turkey led to threats of strike action from his team-mates.
