Martyn off to Everton
Everton have signed Nigel Martyn from Leeds for a nominal fee.
Former England goalkeeper Martyn, who won 23 international caps, was overtaken in the Elland Road pecking order by Paul Robinson last season.
He was previously linked with a move to big-spending Chelsea but did not want to uproot his family and the move across the Pennines proved much more attractive.
The club has two young goalkeepers in Danny Milosevic and Scott Carson waiting in the wings to become Robinson’s understudy and manager Peter Reid admitted it was only fair to allow Martyn to move on.
“He’s in the last year of his deal and he has been a fantastic servant to this club,” said Reid.
“We’ve got young goalkeepers – that’s one of the reasons for letting him go. But the other is as a thank you for being so patient.
“He is a top professional and deserves a first team place somewhere.”
