Gunners stand by their man

Arsenal have vowed to defend Sol Campbell against allegations of violent conduct against Manchester United midfielder Eric Djemba-Djemba.

The Gunners claim they find the FA’s decision to charge their central defender for an alleged kick at Djemba-Djemba during this month’s Community Shield in Cardiff “difficult to accept”.

Campbell was already so annoyed with the FA that he demanded a personal meeting with the governing body’s new chief executive Mark Palios on Monday in an attempt to thrash out his problems with the disciplinary system.

While the talks were cordial, within 24 hours, the 28-year-old has been plunged into another suspension nightmare, with a three-match ban looming should Arsenal fail to get their man off the hook.

“In light of Sol Campbell being charged with violent behaviour following an incident with Manchester United’s Eric Djemba-Djemba during the Community Shield, the club will be requesting a personal hearing where Sol will be staunchly defended,” said an Arsenal statement.

“Needless to say, the club finds this charge difficult to accept, especially in light of the initial challenge made on Sol by Djemba-Djemba.”
