Kaunas striker dies in car accident

Lithuanian champions FBK Kaunas, who are set to face Celtic in the second qualifying round of the Champions League on Wednesday, are coming to terms with the sudden death of striker Audrius Slekys.

The 28-year-old was killed when his car left the road on Sunday morning and collided with a concrete structure.

He was on his way to his summer house near Kaunas to meet his wife and other relatives. Slekys, who was alone in the vehicle, died at the scene.

The player had been with Kaunas since 1999 and won three league championships with the club.

Slekys was the top scorer in Lithuania last season with 19 goals and had already notched a further five during the current campaign before breaking his toe in June.

The injury caused him to miss both legs of Kaunas’ 5-1 aggregate win against HB Torshavn in the first qualifying round of the Champions League.
