Beckham will choose Madrid - Roberto Carlos

Real Madrid defender Roberto Carlos has given the first serious indication that the Spanish giants are in the hunt for David Beckham.

Joan Laporta, presidential candidate for arch-rivals Barcelona, is so far the only party to make an official bid – which was accepted by Manchester United - but a number of Europe’s top clubs have reportedly maintained an interest.

Real were the first club to be linked with Beckham two months ago but after weeks of speculation club officials flatly denied they wanted to sign Beckham.

However, judging by Robert Carlos’ comments, Madrid have been biding their time.

“Let’s wait and see what happens in the next few days,” said the Brazil left-back. What is certain is that Florentino (Perez, Real Madrid president) has done a great deal of hard work so that Beckham will come to Madrid.

“Without doubt, he is one of the best in the world. Our president always goes in search of the best. I am sure that if Beckham has to choose, he will choose Real Madrid ahead of Barcelona. They are not a bad team, but he knows that we are more complete.”

Roberto Carlos also suggested Real should set their sights on signing international team-mate Ronaldinho, currently playing for Paris Saint-Germain, from under the nose of Sir Alex Ferguson.

“Ronaldinho is going to be the number one in the world,” the Brazilian told Radio Marca. It would really please me if he came to join us. He is very young and is certain to succeed.

“He dreams of wearing the Real Madrid shirt one day.”
