Sheringham signs off
DC United 1
Tottenham 0
Teddy Sheringham’s final game for Spurs ended early and ended in defeat.
The former England striker was substituted with 12 minutes to go as Spurs slipped to a 1-0 defeat in their Capital Cup game against DC United in Washington on Wednesday.
Glenn Hoddle sent out a strong side for the clash at the RKC Stadium with Christian Ziege starting his first match since Boxing Day.
Injury-hit midfielder Jamie Redknapp was also in the starting line-up along with Milenko Acimovic.
The Premiership side started well and Robbie Keane had the first sight of goal after two minutes with a shot from outside the box that needed saving.
Sheringham then tried his luck before DC United showed as an attacking force.
Bobby Convey found himself with only Kasey Keller to beat following a one-two with Santino Quaranta but the teenage winger fired into the side-netting.
Acimovic and Keane replied for the visitors before DC took the lead on the half-hour mark.
Ben Olsen did well to pick out veteran Bulgarian striker Hristo Stoitchkov with a cross and his shot took a deflection off Stephen Carr before nestling in the back of the net.
That proved to be the only goal of the game and despite a host of substitutions in the second half, Spurs were unable to claw their way back into the clash.
The game also doubled as a farewell to DC’s former Sheffield Wednesday defender John Harkes.
The former United States international retired from football last month but made a one-off comeback in this match.
Harkes left the field in the 78th minute, the same time as Sheringham, to generous applause from the 14,028 crowd.
