Fan on roof stops Second Division match

A Second Division football match was abandoned today after a fan climbed on to the roof of one of the stands and refused to come down.

Police took the decision to empty Tranmere Rovers’ Prenton Park ground at half time after a supporter climbed up one of the pylons supporting the floodlights.

He then climbed from the pylon on to the roof of the stadium – and refused to come down.

He was only removed when police, with the help of the fire services, followed him up onto the stand roof and took him down to safety.

A spokesman for Merseyside Police said it was not yet known who the man was or why he had decided to climb onto the stadium roof.

He was described as being “safe and well” following the incident.

The game was abandoned with Tranmere Rovers 2-0 up against Mansfield, who were today relegated to the Third Division because of results elsewhere.
