West Brom relegated from Premiership

Sunderland 1, West Brom 2 (full-time)

West Brom fought to the bitter end for their Premiership lives by condemning already-relegated Sunderland to an 11th successive league defeat - but it was no good as West Brom were sent packing from the league also.

A first-half double from Derek McInnes, who pounced on two errors by keeper Mart Poom put the visitors in the driving seat, and although Marcus Stewart made the most of Russell Hoult’s 70th-minute slip, the visitors managed to hang on for victory.

It took a good block from Craddock to take the pace off Koumas’ 75th-minute shot, and McCartney produced a superbly-timed tackle to rob Roberts after he had picked up possession on halfway and made a run for goal.

The home fans were on their feet eight minutes from time when Stewart found space inside the box on the right, but he mishit his left-foot shot and screwed the ball wildly across the face of goal.

McCarthy replaced Kyle with Michael Proctor seconds later, but it was McCartney who almost dragged his side back into it.

The defender got his head to Thornton’s corner and Phillips got a flick just in front of Hoult, but again the keeper threw out a hand to save.

McCartney tested the keeper with a long-range effort a minute later, and there was controversy whe Johnson and Arca collided in the box with the home fans appealing in vain for a penalty.
