Shearer return a mistake, says Waddle

Former England and Newcastle winger Chris Waddle believed it would be a mistake if Alan Shearer returned to the international arena.

Shearer has hinted he may be willing to cut short his retirement and resume national service should coach Sven-Goran Eriksson show interest.

The Newcastle striker is enjoying a renaissance and yesterday scored his 24th goal of the season in the 2-0 defeat at Charlton.

Shearer has threatened defences at home and abroad – in the Champions League - and Waddle said he should stick to club football.

“He is having a wonderful season for Newcastle and I am sure if he decides to play Sven would want him in his squad,” Waddle told BBC Radio Five Live’s Sportsweek programme.

“I am sure he misses it, everyone does when they step away from the international scene. I think he can do a good job but it will be a mistake.

“To go and play for England is very tiring. It is a big risk and the squad is going along nicely.

“I think he has done the right thing and is now focussed on Newcastle.”

Manager Sir Bobby Robson would also be against Shearer returning, according to Waddle.

“I don’t think Bobby would be too pleased. Alan has basically focussed this season and last season on Newcastle and it has been working well,” added Waddle.

“Bobby has been delighted with Alan the last few years and I am sure he will say to him, ’Why spoil things’?”
