McCarthy clings to slim survival hopes

New Sunderland boss Mick McCarthy refused to throw in the towel after seeing his side pushed to the brink of relegation by fellow strugglers Bolton.

The former Republic of Ireland manager was given a hero’s welcome when he was paraded on the pitch at the Stadium of Light before kick-off, but if he needed any reminder of the severity of the challenge he has accepted, he got it in no uncertain terms.
