HT Everton 0 Southampton 1

James Beattie’s 18th goal of the season gave Southampton the half-time lead at Goodison Park.

Everton had much of the territorial control and possession, but they fell asleep at the back to allow the new England international his chance after 34 minutes.

Radzinski’s pace saw him sprint onto McBride’s through-ball but he was blocked on the edge of the box by Prutton, who was booked by referee David Elleray.

Southampton’s willingness to fling bodies in the way of the ball saw Watson’s drive smothered by Michael Svensson after 25 minutes.

The Saints were presented with the opening goal by some unusually sloppy Everton defending as David Weir played James Beattie onside when Fabrice Fernandes’ pass reached him. The striker was in yards of space and calmly chipped a shot over Richard Wright.

A poor Wright clearance almost got Everton into more trouble before Anders Svensson ran from half way and sent a dipping drive just wide.
