Steven Gerrard has tried to defuse the row over his two-footed lunge on Everton's Gary Naysmith in the goalless Merseyside derby at Anfield.

There were three minutes remaining when Naysmith cleared the ball down the left touchline, only to be caught by an ugly-looking challenge from Gerrard.
