Former Irish international Ray Houghton said the Gaelic bid had been unfortunate not to come out on top with a lack of 'outstanding' candidates.

He told Sky Sports News: “It is very disappointing. Ireland and Scotland fans have given so much support to us.

“Football is really an up-and-coming sport in Ireland. We all know about the Gaelic sports but football is really taking off.

“It is disappointing. There weren’t any outstanding countries who wanted the championships, there wasn’t a Germany or an England, there was just a much of a muchness. I was a bit surprised.”
