Cole snatches unlikely goal for Saints draw

Southampton 1, Blackburn 1 (full-time)

Andy Cole snatched an unlikely 1-1 draw for 10-man Blackburn against Southampton with an injury-time goal at St Mary’s after James Beattie’s first-half penalty had put the home side ahead.

Friedel’s one error came in the 72nd minute, when he could only parry a fierce Fernandes shot back into the danger zone, but he held onto the Saint’s follow-up effort.

But Blackburn’s task looked insurmountable when Tugay was given his marching orders by referee Alan Wiley after 76 minutes.

The Turkish midfielder had been booked for a foul on Anders Svensson in the first half, and he received a second for blocking Matthew Oakley’s quick free-kick.

But Blackburn snatched a draw from the jaws of defeat in stoppage time when Lucas Neill beat his man down the left wing to cross for Andy Cole to grab a close-range equaliser.
