The eircom League has been rocked by another registration fiasco.

This time Longford Town have been deducted nine points for playing defender Avery John in three games without seeking international clearance for the player, who went on trial to Colchester in the summer.

Club chairman Jim Hanley can't understand why Colchester sought clearance for a player they hadn't even signed.

Meanwhile, in the eircom League first division last night Waterford United rubber-stamped their place at the top of the table with a 2-2 home draw with Kildare County. Dundalk made up some ground with a 3-1 success over rivals Finn Harps.
