Darius Vassell, Peter Crouch and Lee Hendrie were promoted to the starting line-up while Alpay and Marcus Allback were dropped, and Juan Pablo Angel relegated to the bench.

Everton manager David Moyes gave a second Premiership start to Wayne Rooney, the striker who is still a month short of his 17th birthday, and Richard Wright was back in goal.
