Millwall: 'No concerns' over Wise move

Millwall chairman Theo Paphitis insists he has no qualms about signing Dennis Wise – even though the controversial midfielder has just been sacked by Leicester.

The Foxes terminated Wise’s contract after Callum Davidson suffered a fractured cheekbone during an incident on the club’s pre-season tour of Finland.

Leicester were ordered to re-instate the 35-year-old former England midfielder but won the right to tear up his contract on appeal.

Now Division One rivals Millwall are ready to complete Wise’s signing on Tuesday.

Paphitis told the club’s website: “We didn’t have great concerns about signing Dennis. We know that he can get a bit excited about things but he is also a very good player.

“We’re hopeful that he will take the opportunity to settle down at The Den and kick-start his career once more with us.

“At the age of 35 he still has much to offer.”

Paphitis, explaining how the move for Wise came about, added: “We met with Dennis on Thursday and had a long discussion with him about the possibility of him joining us.

“As a result he agreed to do so. We shook hands and once he’s sorted out a few legal formalities we expect him with us on Tuesday.”

Lions boss Mark McGhee told Sky Sports News: “He will be coming to sign for us on Tuesday and we’re delighted that a player like Dennis will be joining us.”

“He will not be with us in time to play against Walsall tomorrow but he will join us and sign on Tuesday.

“We have been on the case over the last two weeks but with his appeal going on we’ve had to wait. As soon as we knew the result we met with Dennis straight away.

“I’m sure the supporters will be looking forward to seeing Dennis in a Millwall shirt.

“There have been a lot things going on but he wants to get on with football and get on with his life - and we can take advantage of that.

“We can make him welcome and the fans will make him welcome. If he comes and wants to see out his career here that will do for me.

“Dennis Wise wants to play football and get back into a competitive team.

“With the players that we have missing I think it is a massive signing. I think it is a bargain, Dennis is a quality player.”
