Glenn Roeder defended his decision to substitute Paolo di Canio after the West Ham captain launched a four-letter tirade at his manager during the 3-2 defeat Tottenham.

Di Canio made only his second start of the season following surgery on his knee four months ago, but set up both West Ham goals in a dramatic finale at White Hart Lane.
