Keown hails hero Toure

Martin Keown paid tribute to goalscorer Kola Toure – who earned Arsenal a draw in the Barclaycard Premiership clash with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge today.

The Ivory Coast-born defender netted in the second half of the 1-1, at a time when the Gunners were a goal behind and down to 10 men following the dismissal of Patrick Vieira for two bookings.

And Keown said: “He’s worked hard since he’s come here. He came with a back injury but is a credit to his family.”

Keown continued: “We showed our qualities when we were down to 10 men – and probably played better for a while – but Chelsea always give you a hard game.

On the dismissal of midfielder Vieira, the former England defender added on Sky Sports: “We just pick the pieces up afterwards – but Patrick’s a committed player and we don’t want to take anything away from him.”

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger described the sending off as ``harsh'' and hopes referee Andy D'Urso will reconsider his decision after watching a video of the match.

Wenger continued on Sky Sports: “I believe the sending off was very harsh. He played the ball on both occasions and I hope the referee will have a look at it and will reconsider the situation.

“I would like him to have a look at it again and if he does and feels it was harsh then maybe he will reconsider.”

On the game itself the Frenchman added: “At 1-0 down, away from home with 40 minutes to go you have to show great strength.

“But once again we have showed we are a team – even though we’re missing great players. My team were great today, physically, technically and mentally."

Jesper Gronkjaer, who was involved in the challenge with Vieira which resulted in the Frenchman picking up his second booking, also felt the player was unlucky to be dismissed.

The Dane said: “As I kicked the ball I followed through and hit the bottom of his foot. I don’t think he did it on purpose. I don’t want to have him sent off but it was the referee’s decision and it was hard for him.

“I don’t think it was a dirty game.”
