Bolton beat deadline bid for Campo
Real Madrid defender Ivan Campo is poised to join Bolton before the transfer window closes tomorrow.
Campo, 28, is expected to arrive later today for talks with manager Sam Allardyce.
Bolton are hoping to finalise a season-long loan deal for the Spaniard.
Allardyce said: “Campo is flying in from Madrid and we are looking at a loan deal this season, rather than a two-year deal which we discussed before.
”It looks like he is going to accept that although we have not finished it off yet.
”He will have a quick medical and hopefully train with the boys tomorrow prior to Sunday’s game.”
Allardyce said he would be reluctant to name Campo in his squad to face Aston Villa as he had not had any match practice this season.
”I need to talk to him at great length first to find out how many competitive games he has played,” said the Bolton boss.
”I know he is a fit lad and he has been through Real’s pre-season with no problems.
”If he hasn’t had a competitive game, it’s unfair to throw him in straight away until he finds his feet.”
Allardyce believes Campo is just the man to plug the leaks at the back, which have seen Bolton concede six goals in their opening two games.
Allardyce said: “Campo has played in the Champions League and been with Real in the Spanish top division for a number of years.
”At 28 he should be hitting the height of his maturity.
”He is very strong, very quick and good in the air. We have conceded six goals in three games and I hope we’ve got all our bad luck, bad play and bad defending in these games out of the way.
”We need to get back to being a solid unit again and he should be a major part of that.”
Turkish midfielder Akin Bulent has been cleared to play for Bolton after Galatasaray were ordered to give international clearance.
The ruling came from the nation’s footballing authority and Allardyce is delighted his new recruit has been cleared to play once he fully recovers from knee surgery.
”He will be one relieved lad,” said Allardyce. “He’s had a bad time with his problems at Galatasaray.
”They’ve not paid his wages for four to five months. He even had to pay for his own knee ligament surgery.
”It’s been a traumatic period for him but he’s come through it with flying colours and shown great determination.”
