Beckham signs autobiography deal

Football legend David Beckham has signed a multi-million pound deal to publish his "first real autobiography".

The England and Manchester United midfield player promises to reveal details of his career and private life "in my own words for the first time", up to the end of the current season.

The book, to be published by HarperCollins in autumn next year, follows Dean Freeman’s photographic portrait of the superstar in Beckham: My World, which first hit the shelves two years ago.

Readers will follow the England captain’s description of his highs and lows during the World Cup 2002, from his penalty winner against Argentina to the 2-1 defeat by Brazil.

Highlights of the footballer’s life off the pitch will include his marriage to Spice Girl Victoria Beckham, the birth of his son, Brooklyn, and the imminent arrival of their second child next month.

The soccer idol could even disclose his sources of inspiration for his varied hairstyles and, at times, unusual outfits that have been copied by thousands of admirers.

On signing the contract, Beckham said: "Although I have been involved in one or two book projects before, this will be my first autobiography.

"I reckon I have had a pretty interesting career so far and am looking forward to telling my story in my own words for the first time."

Amanda Ridout, managing director of HarperCollins General Books, said: "This will be the publishing event of 2003.

"David will give us a fascinating insight into the private life of a man whose every move is followed on the world stage."

A HarperCollins spokeswoman refused to disclose the exact sum but confirmed it was a "multi-million pound" deal.
