Dundee businessman Eddie Thompson has confirmed he is in negotiations with former Dundee United chairman Jim McLean in a bid to buy his 42% share in the club.

The grocery magnate has battled for years to get on to the Tannadice board, but his dream could now become reality.

Thompson told PA Sport:

"Once we’ve actually got something to say then we would do so, but we are in talks and obviously these will develop."

Thompson, who has been a United fan for 37 years, will be at tomorrow’s Premier League game

with Kilmarnock and supporters seem to be behind his move.

Fans’ group United For Change spokesman Derek Robertson insisted: "If Mr Thompson manages to secure Mr McLean’s share it will be good for the club."

The current board - who took over as part of a shake-up last season - have admitted they failed in their efforts to buy McLean’s shares.

But it now appears the United legend is ready to sell with Thompson looking for a quick and successful conclusion.
