Leeds chief expects more transfers

Leeds chairman Peter Ridsdale does not expect Nick Barmby to be Terry Venables’ last signing of the summer - and nor will Rio Ferdinand be the last to leave the club.

Leeds yesterday agreed a £2.75m (€4.38m) fee with Liverpool for former England midfielder Barmby as Venables spent the first of the £30m (€47.7m) received for Manchester United defender Ferdinand.

Barmby was discussing personal terms and undergoing a medical at Elland Road today after arriving at Leeds’ Thorp Arch training ground yesterday.

Joining Leeds would reunite the Hull-born player with Venables, who was manager at Tottenham when Barmby began his professional career.

And Ridsdale revealed the former England manager is set to dip into the transfer market again in the near future.

He told Sky Sports News: ‘‘We agreed when we offered Terry the job he could bring in two or three players he wanted and he told me who they were. This could be the first of them but we have also still got to reduce the squad size.’’
