Alan Matthews has been named manager of Longford Town after signing a two-year part-time deal.

Matthews will replace Martin Lawlor, who was sacked just before the club's first game in the new Eircom League season.

Matthews, a former goalkeeper and assistant manager at Shelbourne, said: "It is a big challenge. Last year the club just about retained its Premier Division status. We've got to try and improve on that."
