McLeish warns players over America trip
Rangers manager Alex McLeish has warned his players that the trip to New York will not be comfortable.
The Light Blues have set off for the United States in a four-game tour.
Santos of Brazil and Argentinian aces River Plate will provide the opposition in the two glamour games, while American sides will offer a less stern test.
But McLeish insists any player who has ‘‘let himself go’’ during the holidays could find himself struggling as he tones his squad for the challenge of wresting the Scottish Premier League title from Celtic.
McLeish said: ‘‘We are going to the States to work hard, train hard and use the games as a vital part of our preparations.
‘There will be a bit of time off for the lads to do some sightseeing because we are away for almost two weeks.
‘‘But it is not a holiday. This is pre-season and it is vital we are ready.’’
Despite his words of warning McLeish has been impressed with what he has seen so far.
‘‘I am very happy with the condition of the players after the break.
‘‘I think they know that they cannot let themselves go during the summer break - though we did tell them they could let their hair down. Within reason of course.
‘‘But we also told them to tick over by going to the gym or playing a bit of tennis or golf and I’m glad to say they have listened.
‘‘This is not an enjoyable time for players but they have to go through it as it is vital to any success they might achieve.
‘‘I know from personal experience that, if you let yourself go during the summer, it can be hard to get back.’’
McLeish has urged new signings Mikel Arteta and Kevin Muscat to prove themselves in pre-season and force their way into the side for the opening game of the season on August 3.
McLeish said: ‘‘First and foremost, they have to establish themselves in the first team.
‘‘We have a number of good players playing in Mikel Arteta’s and Kevin Muscat’s positions.
‘‘But pre-season is the opportunity for the players to prove themselves ahead of the first game of the season against Kilmarnock next month.’’
Rangers striker Michael Mols admits Celtic manager Martin O’Neill’s decision to spurn Leeds has not been welcomed at Ibrox.
Mols said: ‘‘I don’t know if it is good news for us but it is certainly good news for Celtic.
‘‘He has won won the title twice in the last two years and is a very good manager.’’
Fringe players, defender Robert Malcolm and goalkeeper Allan McGregor have both agreed to new deals at the club.
