Tel can get Rio and Bowyer to stay - Lorimer

Leeds United legend Peter Lorimer believes Terry Venables’ first job will be to persuade Rio Ferdinand and Lee Bowyer to stay at Elland Road.

Lorimer, a member of Don Revie’s all-conquering Leeds team of the 70s, said: ‘‘Leeds have to get rid of around £15million of players but I think Terry will get rid of three or four of the lesser lights.

‘‘The main thing is to talk Rio Ferdinand and Lee Bowyer to stay at Leeds United.

‘‘He has to convince them they have a future at Elland Road. That is his number one job,’’ he said.

Lorimer added: ‘‘When you look at coaches Terry is ranked as one of the best in the world. He did well at Barcelona, England, Australia and won the FA Cup with Tottenham.

‘‘He has been out of football out of choice. Now it is time to get out of the armchair and get on with it.

‘‘We are looking to the future. Terry can work with one of the best squads in the country. He has a high profile job. I would think it is the only job he would do.

‘‘Look at the potential he has to work with. We have young players with great futures. Anyone would jump at this chance. It shows he believes in this.’’

Lorimer also denied that Venables, who has a two-year contract, is a stop-gap appointment.

‘‘Terry would not be stop-gap for anyone. He has come to do a job ,’’ he told Sky Sports News.

‘‘Two years is long enough. Forget long-term contracts. There is a challenge here. We need to bring some silverware to Elland Road.’’
