Overhaul planned for eircom play-offs

Eircom League Division One clubs are in for an end of season cash bonanza as the eircom League clubs have overwhelmingly voted for a radical shake up in the competitions end of season play off structure.

The change is the first instance of the new progressive direction that the eircom League and its member clubs are moving towards.

The changes in the system will see the second to bottom club of the premier division play against the team finishing fourth in Division One.

The second and third placed team will meet in the other semi final to be played over 2 legs. The winners will then meet in the final.

The benefits for Division One clubs will mean that as many clubs as possible will have more meaningful matches up to the final game of the season.

Last year's final play off match between Longford Town and Finn Harps had a total attendance over the two games of 7000.

"The extension of the play offs will create a lot of excitement for the supporters and most importantly much needed revenue for the clubs," said Ger O’Brien of Waterford United.

Darren Bernstein, Marketing Executive for the eircom League added, "This is a triumph for common sense, the clubs have shown great solidarity and this decision is a massive boost for all clubs but in particular the division one clubs who often get the rough end of the deal."

Meanwhile, elsewhere in the eircom League, Cork City will be sporting new colours. The Leesiders have moved from their traditional red to green jerseys, green shorts and white socks.

The Turner's Cross based club will sport their new attire in their opening match against Shelbourne tomorrow night.
