Deenihan urges Minister to reconsider Phoenix Park decision

Fine Gael spokesman on sport, Jimmy Deenihan TD, this morning urged Minister John O'Donoghue to join him in pleading the case for hundreds of thousands of football supporters who want to welcome the Irish soccer team home to the streets of Dublin.

Fine Gael spokesman on sport, Jimmy Deenihan TD, this morning urged Minister John O'Donoghue to join him in pleading the case for hundreds of thousands of football supporters who want to welcome the Irish soccer team home to the streets of Dublin.

"The Phoenix Park didn't work out as a welcome home venue after USA 94. A city centre event would create a much better atmosphere and allow supporters to see their heroes close up.

"Many other events have been held over the last few years without hassle in the College Green area and there is no good reason why this celebration cannot be held in the city centre.

"The amazing performances of Mick McCarty's team should not be overshadowed in any way. The fans and the players deserve better and the Minister's intervention can reverse this decision."
