Eriksson: We must learn French lesson

Sven-Goran Eriksson has admitted to being stunned by France’s inglorious exit from the World Cup finals.

But he also believes that it will serve as a warning to England if there was any chance of complacency creeping in before tomorrow’s vital match with Nigeria in Osaka.

And Eriksson is also hoping that France’s exit without scoring a single goal in their three games will act as a lucky omen for England.

For the last time the reigning champions failed to go past the first round was Brazil in 1966 - when England went onto win the trophy.

Eriksson said: ‘‘You saw the France result today and it was extremely surprising but it just confirmed that you don’t have any easy games at all.

‘‘I have seen only one easy game in this World Cup and that was when Germany beat Saudi Arabia 8-0. All the others have been tight games.

‘‘Anything can happen in them and it is the same tomorrow when we will be facing Nigeria. Anything can happen.

‘‘But I have to admit that I wish I’d had a bet before the World Cup on France not even scoring a goal in three games.

‘‘I think in all honesty I don’t think anyone would have believed that. But it happens in football and they will come back for sure.

‘‘I’m told that the last time the holders went out in the first round was back in 1966. So let’s hope that is a lucky omen! I hope so.’’
