Metsu hails historic day

Senegal coach Bruno Metsu described it as ‘‘an historic day for Senegal’’ after the African nation reached the second round of the World Cup with a 3-3 draw with Uruguay.

Senegal made history by claiming second place behind Denmark in Group A after a remarkable match which saw them lose a 3-0 half-time lead.

Metsu said: ‘‘It’s a great day for us and an historic day for Senegal to qualify for the last 16 in our first World Cup - it’s extraordinary.

‘‘We had a great first half but in the second we had to work really hard - when they scored just after the break I began to worry. But this draw feels like a win.’’

Senegal could face England in the next round in Oita as they will take on the winners of Group F.

When asked which team he would prefer from Group F, Metsu - whose side beat France 1-0 in the opening match- said he had ‘‘no preference‘‘.

‘‘We’re up against some of the best teams in the world - Argentina, England, Sweden,’’ he said.

‘‘They’re all difficult. We’ll try and produce another surprise like we did against France but it will be difficult.’’
