France’s defence of the World Cup ended in dismal failure today after they became the first reigning champions since Brazil in 1966 to bow out of the tournament.

The 1998 champions were beaten 2-0 by Denmark, who qualify from Group A along with shock troops Senegal after they drew 3-3 with Uruguay.
