The Football Association of Ireland has called for ‘‘closure’’ on the Roy Keane affair - despite the midfielder confessing in an emotional interview he had not given up hope of playing in the World Cup.

Four days after a bitter bust-up with boss Mick McCarthy led to his expulsion from the Ireland squad, the former squad captain last night revealed his sense of hurt at events - and disappointment at the lack of support shown to him by team-mates.
